Comoros/Moheli: Moheli Lemurs
Moheli island is home to the endangered Moheli lemur (Eulemur mongoz), also known as the mongoose lemur (and you only thought lemurs live in Madagascar!). The Moheli Laka Lodge that we stayed at had four lemurs (and a tiny 2-week baby) show up like a clock exactly at 4pm for some bananas. The mongoose lemurs are small to medium-sized, with males having a darker face and females having a reddish-brown face, both sexes have a grayish body. They can be active both during the day and night, and feed mostly on fruits and nectar. The four we saw were super playful and acrobatic and really habituated, although they were completely wild animals. The Moheli lemurs are critically endangered, with population facing significant threats from habitat destruction, perhaps less then a couple hundreds are left on the island.
