Comoros: Old Medina of Moroni
While Zanzibar’s medieval stone town with its narrow streets and carved doors is world famous, nobody knows about Moroni. Nevertheless, the historic ancient medina is just as spectacular – an absolute maze of narrow alleyways without any tourists or souvenir shops with old unrestored ornate wooden and metal doors. Moroni was founded in the 10th century by Arab traders of the Sultanate of Zanzibar and played an important role in the trade in the Indian Ocean. Not much has changed over the centuries in the historic medina and walking around you feel like you are stepping back in time.
