Costa Rica: Banana Plantations around Limon
Limon is the heart of Costa Rica’s banana industry. Approximately 80% of the country’s banana plantations are located in this province, thanks to its humid, low-lying Caribbean climate. As you drive south from Puerto Limon toward Cahuita or Puerto Viejo – it’s almost an endless sea of green. Both Del Monte and Dole are here in size. The bananas are planting by using “cloned” root bulbs. Then the ripening fruits are covered in blue plastic bags to prevent insects and birds from getting to them. And finally the ripe bunches are collected by using aerial monorails built around the plantations.
