Costa Rica: Jaguar Rescue Center – Two-Tows Sloths

The real showstoppers at the Jaguar Rescue Center were the adorable two-towed sloths, a species endemic to Costa Rica. Unlike their smaller relatives, the three-toes sloths, these guys are bigger and quite more agile, moving around and climbing – although it all looks like a slow motion video. The name is really a misnomer – they have three toes on hind legs but only two claws on the front arms. They have cute, somewhat pig-like faces, they are omnivorous and mostly nocturnal, and their entire biology is built for hanging – in fact they spend 90% of their lives upside down. They only descend to the ground once a week to poop, which is the most dangerous time for them as they are very vulnerable to predators like jaguars.
