Costa Rica: Moin – Cruising Tortuguero Canal
Cruising the Tortuguero Canals is the most popular nature activity in Limon, often called “Costa Rica’s Amazon.” Starting at a small port of Moin, you cruise the series of natural and manmade canals stretching north along the coast. The canals are famous for wildlife spotting from the water – lots of mammals, reptiles, birds. We saw herons, toucans, kingfishers. We saw caymans, iguanas, and even the “Jesus Christ” lizards (because they can run across the water’s surface). We saw large troops of howler monkeys moving through the trees and just above our heads. And we also spotted multiple three-toes sloths hanging on the tree trunks motionless. And we even saw some really cute bats hidden in a palm tree!
