Costa Rica: Puerto Limon – Catedral Sagrado Corazon de Jesus Catedral

Sagrado Corazon de Jesus (Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus) is definitely the main attraction in town. The striking modernist building dates to 2010, but a cathedral stood here from the mid-19th century. However, it was severely damaged during the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake in 1991, and eventually collapsed. The new modernist structure was design and erected over the years and many artifacts and some stained glass from the old cathedral were transferred here. The 46m (151-ft) concrete spire is a landmark visible from many parts of the city. The design accounts for Limon’s sweltering heat by using wall openings to allow for natural airflow instead of traditional air conditioning. Stunning inside and out!
