Croatia: Osijek
Osijek is the forth largest town in Croatia, but way off the beaten tourist path in the far northeastern corner of the country, the region known as Slavonia. Unlike more famous locales like Zagreb or Varazdin, Osijek has a much more provincial and laid back and forgotten feel. But the town is very beautiful and has a lot of attractions, albeit a bit spread out. The main square has a gorgeous red-brick cathedral (next post), several monuments, and plethora of old buildings along the streets radiating in all directions. The river Drava flows through the town and a few kilometers downstream lies Tvrda or Old Town Osijek – a star-shaped 19th century Habsburg fort full of baroque churches and buildings. And staying in town overnight, you can enjoy an awesome dinner on the river!
