Croatia: Slavonski Brod Fortress
The fortress was built at the edge of Hapsburgs’ empire between 1715 and 1780 and was supposed to be the major fortification against the Ottoman Empire (even today is stands right on the border with Bosnia). The fortress has multiple defense levels with moats, star-shapes design and so on. Heavy bombing in WWII did some serious damage. Since then until 1990s, the fortress serves as military barracks. But today it looks pretty depressing – everything is abandoned, dilapidated, and broken, there has been no restoration and the site looks abysmal.
