Cuba: Bahia de Baitiquiri – Flamingoes
An unexpected find – dozens of ultra-pink flamingoes at the Bahía de Baitiquirí, a salt water lagoon along the southern coast near the town of San Antonio del Sur. Cuba is actually famous for American Flamingo (also known as the Caribbean Flamingo) that congregate here in great numbers, with an estimated 70,000 breeding adults. There are six distinct species of flamingo in the world – 2 in Africa, 3 in South America, and this American flamingo in the Caribbean. This species is the brightest of all the flamingos. The brightness is a result of the carotenoid pigments they consume the brackish salty lagoons.
