Cuba: Canyon del Yumuri – Tocororo aka Cuban Trogon

Exploring the Canyon del Yumuri, we were on a mission to see the national bird of Cuba – tocororo aka Cuban trogon (Priotelus temnurus). The “tocororo” name actually imitates how the bird sounds. While cruising down the river, we could hear the bird quite a lot, but couldn’t see it in the jungle. But luckily our boating guide saw that we are in a mission and got us into the jungle to see the birds, several of them and quite close. The bird is medium sized and has the same colors as the Cuban flag – red, white, and blue (could be actually American as well). Its body is predominantly bluish, with a crimson-red belly, white underparts, and blue feathers on its wings and tail – quite a striking color combination and rather bright. Plus we saw several other bird species.
