Cuba: Havana – Castillo de la Real Fuerza
Castillo de la Real Fuerza was the first fortress built in Havana, it’s located right next to the Plaza de Armas. It is a relatively small fort but beautiful nonetheless, built in 1558 in a perfect pentagonal shape. Castillo de la Real Fuerza was intended to fend off attacks from pirates, but was never used for the purpose since it was situated too far deep in the bay. The fort s the oldest stone fortress in the Western Hemisphere and is a true engineering marvel with star shape, moat, drawbridge, and walls that are 10m high and 5m thick. It is a UNESCO World Heritage sight.
