Cuba: Havana – El Morro Fortress
El Morro Fortress guards the old city of Havana and occupies a promontory opposite the city. It was built in 1589 right at the mouth of the Havana harbor to protect the entrance. The fort saw serious action in 1762 when the British went in all out assault and took Havana just to return it back to Spain a year later in exchange for Florida. The fort is very impressive with towers, moats, 3-meter thick walls and guns. And the symbol of Havana – the lighthouse – is still here and is fully operational. Right nearby is a giant statue of Christ with fantastic views of the Havana Vieja (old city) across the bay.
