Cuba: Rare Birds at Topes de Collantes
The hike through the mountain rainforest yielded sightings of three super rare birds that even the guides were shocked to see: Tocororo (Priotelus temnurus), which is Cuba’s national bird – a large bird related to quetzal whose colors are the same as those of the Cuban flag. Cuban Green Woodpecker (Xiphidiopicus percussus) – critically endangered little woodpecker, this one was feeding babies in the tree hole. And finally, another woodpecker species, West Indian Woodpecker (Melanerpes superciliaris).
