Denmark: Copenhagen – Marble Church

Frederik’s Church aka Marble Church looks like a grand cathedral, while in actuality it’s just a regular church in the heart of old town Copenhagen. The church was founded in 1740 to commemorate 300 year anniversary of the first coronation of the Danish royal dynasty. When built, it was the largest church dome in Scandinavia with a span of 31 m (102 ft). The Roman baroque dome rests in twelve massive columns, with lots of frescos inside the dome and lots of statues on the outside. Interestingly, the church remained unfinished and stood as semi-ruin for over 150’years until 1894, when it was finally built and open for public.
