Dominican Republic: Mundo King Castle in Sosua
This is absolutely one of the most bizarre things in the world! The Mundo King Castle is Sosua is part-palace, part-alien spaceship, part-dungeon, part-modern art museum, part-gaudi-like extravaganza, but mostly just craziness. A German artist named Rolf Schulz decided at the age of 51 to leave us hometown of Hamburg and move to Dominican Republic in pursuit of his lifelong dream of building a castle, probably to eventually make contact with aliens and be taken by them. The castle is as weird and bizarre from the outside as it is inside – hundreds of unusual artworks, alien-themed paintings of spaceships leaving earth, aliens vs communism and capitalism, extraterrestrial messages, massive collection of exotic sexual Haitian sculptures, carvings in stone and wood, murals, and even four actual spaceships. Rolf Schulz began the construction in 1990 and lived in it without electricity or running water until he died in 2018. This place is like MOMA or Guggenheim Bilbao on some serious hallucinogenic drugs.
