Dominican Republic: Puerto Plata – Teleferico & Mount Isabel de Torres
The only cable car in the entire Caribbean is in Puerto Plata, rising 800 meters (2,625 feet) to the top of Mount Isabel de Torres. It was built in 1975 and take about 10 minutes to ride up. The top of the mountain is a natural park with tropical flora and fauna and the centerpiece statue of Christ the Redeemer (like the one in Brazil, just a bit smaller). The views down to Puerto Plata and beyond to the Atlantic Ocean are stunning – you are at the cloud level here and the blues of the skies and darker blues of the ocean contrast nicely with the white of the clouds and verdant green of the tropical forest. When done with the view – plenty of hiking trails around beautiful flora.
