Dominican Republic: Santo Domingo – Basilica Catedral

Basilica Cathedral of Santa María la Menor is the oldest cathedral in the Americas built in 1512 and was the first catholic diocese of the New World. While it’s technically a gothic church, it really has more elements of baroque and even Byzantine, being rather low and round. It’s built entirely out of coral limestone. Inside there are plenty of centuries-old religious architects and even more of them are in the treasury underneath the cathedral. Interestingly, the remains of Christopher Columbus were interned here before moved back to Spain.
