East Antarctica: Landing on an Icefloe
An absolutely incredible experience was landing on an icefloe. An iceflow, just about 10m in diameter accommodated nearly fifty people in the middle of the Southern Ocean and thousands of feet of deep water beneath you! Totally insane and it was floating and moving in the big oceanic swell. And the tabular icebergs were standing like massive mountains in the distance. And then….. absolutely unexpectedly and to everyone’s surprise – Adelie penguins jumped onto the iceflow with people and started running around and looking and interacting and eventually coming down and relaxing and just sharing the ice with people, inquisitively coming close and looking. The penguins kept on coming on the ice and soon there were almost a dozen of them. It was one of the most amazing and incredible wildlife experiences in my life.
