Ecuador: Cuenca – Catedral Nueva
Catedral Nueva aka Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción was meant to replace the small original cathedral in the city. The construction began in 1885 and took nearly a century to complete, being consecrated in 1967. Its most recognizable feature is the three giant domes covered in striking blue and white glazed tile imported from Czechoslovakia. The bell towers on the main facade are truncated due to an architectural calculation error that determined the foundation could not support the projected weight of the full towers and their bells. You can climb to the rooftop for panoramic views of the city and the domes!
