Ecuador: Cuenca – Centro Historico
The historic center of science is quite compact and walkable and it’s easy to explore this UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic city. Cuenca is often called the “Athens of Ecuador” due to its rich history, culture, and architecture, especially its numerous colonial-era churches.besides the two cathedrals – Vieja and Nueva – there are scores of beautiful old churches: Iglesia de San Alfonso, Iglesia de Todos Santos, Iglesia San Sebastian, Iglesia Santo Cenáculo, Iglesia de Santo Domingo, Iglesia María Auxiliadora, Iglesia San Blas and many others. There are also many open plaza and plenty of cafes and coffee shops. The city looks fantastic during sunset and at dusk and feels rather safe to walk around at night along the lit cobblestone streets.
