Ecuador: Cuidad Mittad Del Mundo
Ciudad Mitad del Mundo aka Middle of the World City marks the spot where an 18th-century French Geodesic Mission calculated the location of the equatorial line. The main feature is the huge Equatorial Monument – 30m stone tower topped with a brass globe. You can climb to the top for a panoramic view of the surrounding Andes. Inside, there is an Ethnographic Museum showcasing the diverse indigenous cultures of Ecuador, as well as the Galapagos Islands. In front of the monument is the famous painted line where you have one foot in the Northern Hemisphere and one in the Southern Hemisphere, straddling the equator.
