Ecuador: Quito – Catedral Metropolitana de Quito

Catedral Metropolitana de Quito stand on the main Plaza Grande in the city’s historic center and is one of the oldest and most important religious structures in South America. Consecrated in 1572, this cathedral is a blend of architectural styles, predominantly featuring a Neoclassical facade and Baroque elements within. The interior impresses with ornate colonial art, gold-leaf altars, and paintings and sculptures by famous artists. It serves as the seat of the Archdiocese of Quito and houses the tombs of key historical figures, including independence hero Antonio Sucre, several Ecuadorian presidents, bishops, and cardinals.
