Ecuador: Refugio Paz de las Aves

Refugio Paz de las Aves is a world-renowned private nature reserve located in the cloud forests near Mindo in Ecuador. It is a “bucket list” destination for birdwatchers because it offers to see several rare bird species, like Andean Cock-of-the-rock and Antpittas. The refuge is managed by brothers Angel and Rodrigo Paz, who became famous in the birding world as the “Bird Whisperers,” having tamed the usually absolutely elusive birds to come regularly for feeding time. The place offers simple but comfy amenities and great local food, but it’s the location and birding opportunities that are simply mind-boggling.
