Egypt/Sinai: Saint Catherine’s Monastery on Mount Sinai
Saint Catherine’s Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site, sits at the foot of Mount Sinai and is the oldest working Christian monastery in the world, founded in 548-565 AD. Inside the fortress-like walls is the chapel of the burning bush (and one of the bushes growing here is supposedly the one that Moses saw burn). The museum inside holds many priceless treasures including the world-famous icon of Jesus with different eyes. The monastery is administered by the Sinai Orthodox Church, an autonomous unit of the Greek Orthodox Church. As a biblical site, it is sacred to in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.
