Egypt: Luxor – Colossi of Memnon
Colossi of Memnom are two giant statues of the Pharaoh Amenhotep III. Towering over 18m/60ft high, they stand about 150 feet apart, with the background of the Valley of the Kings far away in the distance. Both are single blocks of quartzite sandstone, weighing 720 tons each. They were transported here overland from a quarry 675km away! They are quite damaged by time and people, since being erected in the 14th century BC as guards to the Royal Tombs of the Pharaohs.
