Egypt: Saqqara Pyramids
Saqqara Pyramids are the most ancient pyramids in Egypt and served as the burial grounds for the Pharos ruling in Memphis, the first capital of Egypt. The site includes several pyramids in various state of decay as well as several burial complexes and tombs from the earlier Egyptian dynasties. The most famous pyramid is the Step Pyramid of Djoser, with a rectangular base and giant rectangular step levels leading to the top – this was one of the first pyramids ever built and step approach was the only known way then. Next to it is the columned temple complex of Djoser, rising from the desert sands. A little further out is the Sand Pyramid of Unas. The extensive area of Saqqara is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
