England: Lincoln
Lincoln is the next town of size along the east coast of England and the capital of Lincolnshire. It was originally a Roman settlement. The town sits on a hill above the surrounding flatlands and boasts spectacular castle and cathedrals. The Lincoln Cathedral is a massive medieval structure with three towers and when built in 1072, it was the tallest building in the world for the next 200 years! Just nearby is the Lincoln Castle, also built in the 11th century by William the Conquerer. Around the cathedral and the castle is a jigsaw of cobblestone streets and many old medieval buildings, preserving a beautiful historic core.
