Equatorial Guinea: Mongomo – Basilica of Mongomo
Many people know about the largest church in Africa (and the world) in the Ivory Coast, but few know that the second largest church in Africa is the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Mongomo in the Equatorial Guinea, not far from the border with Gabon. Construction began and 2006 and the basilica was consecrated in 2011, designed and built by Italians. The capacity is over 1,000 faithful. Interestingly, the spectacular white basilica is literally in the middle of nowhere, only about 7k people live in Mongomo. But the new capital of Equatorial Guinea, ala Brasilia in Brazil, is being built with all the oil revenue the country collects. Coincidentally (or not), the current president of Equatorial Guinea was born in Mongomo (he’s been ruling since 1979 and is the longest serving head of state in the world).
