Eritrea: Eritrean Escarpment & Road to Massawa
The road from Asmara ti Massawa is a dramatic and scenic route that descends from the highlands around the capital to the coastal city on the Red Sea. The road traverses the Eritrean escarpment, an incredibly steep and rugged landscape offering breathtaking views. This descent covers 2,325 meters (7,628 feet). The Eritrean escarpment is a geological feature where the highlands abruptly give way to the lower plains and coastal areas. This results in steep cliffs, valleys, and gorges, creating a dramatic backdrop descent, with plenty of switchbacks and hairpin turns, and absolutely stunning panoramic views. And the rainstorms are ever present in the highlands so we got to see some stunningly bright rainbows.
