Eritrea: Massawa – Red Sea Museum
The Red Sea Museum in Massawa maybe not be of the quality and size of the Metropolitan in NYC, but it’s quite unique and a great source of information about the region. Housed in a single floor in a rather simple building, it has 5 different sections – Natural History, Archeological, Ethnographic, Colonial, and Military. The Natiral History has a lot about the marine life and even a full skeleton of the uncommon Bryde’s whale. The Archeological section has a a full original skull of a prehistoric man, possibly even earlier one than the Ethiopian Lucy. Ethnographic section has a lot of the people populating the region, while the colonial talks about the Italian period. Finally, the largest section is about the Eritrean War and conquest and liberation of Massawa.
