Estonia: Tallinn – Wandering Around Tallinn Old Town
Tallinn blows away the competition when it comes to medieval old towns in the Baltics. Its UNESCO listed historic center is just beyond spectacular with actually two old towns – the Toompea or the High Town and the large Old Town just below it. Tallinn has been a major city in all the nations that controlled it throughout history – Danes, Germans, Swedish, Russians – and as such it was heavily fortified and filled with cathedrals. Of the 66 original towers and walls, 13 still remain. The lower town has several cathedrals spiking out into the sky and central square is very impressive. The upper town has the castle and also the Russian Cathedral as well as views down into the old town.
