Ethiopia: Danakil – Danakil Salt Pans & Salt Mining Area
This place used to be amazing – the open air salt mines were incredible with workers cutting up salt blocks from the ground and loading them up camels and donkeys and the long caravans would then walk west toward Tigray. Since the war, caravans no longer exist, and salt production is mostly done at night and moved by trucks. Still the salt blocks are being cut and produced my manual labor in hatch and hot conditions, just like it has been for centuries. The salt flats all around still look insanely amazing – as far as the eye can see to the horizon.
