Ethiopia: Danakil – Lake Afrera
Afar Region is Ethiopia is the in hospital land of desert, volcanic features, and super hot temps. Lake Afrera is one of the large lakes in the Danakil depression, the lake is at the elevation of -102m / -335 ft below sea level. The lake is quite large, over 100 sq km, fed by the underground streams, has some hot springs on shores, and hyper-saline. The latter makes it a source for commercial salt extraction on significant scale. Supposedly the lake sits in a giant rift and is 150m deep in places. It’s estimated that there are deposit of nearly 300 million tons of rock salt here.
