Ethiopia: Danakil – Salt Pans
Danakil Depression is one of the lowest places on earth, officially at -127 meters but by my altimeter measurements it bottoms at around -160 meters (-500 feet). It’s a region populated by Afar people on the border with Eritrea, it’s more or less totally lawless and both US and UK governments advise against traveling here. But it is one of the most (if not THE MOST) incredible places on earth – salt lake, salt pans, salt towers, boiling lakes, sulfuric hot springs, salt flowers and weird formations – it has it all. Camel caravans galore! Plus 7 volcanoes, one below sea level, one with boiling lava inside, the rest yet unexplored. It’s totally surreal and you feel like you are in Star Wars!
