Ethiopia: Gondar – Debre Berham Selassie Church
Debre Berham Selassie is one of the most beautiful churches in Ethiopia. The actual church building is surrounded by a circular stone wall with 12 towers and the main gate built to resemble a lion’s head (Lion of Judah is the national symbol in Ethiopia and is present in everything from national symbols to beer ads). Inside the oval church building, it’s absolutely stunning with paintings and frescos covering walls and ceilings. Walls depict various scenes from the bible, while the ceiling has 135 cherubs (winged angels with large head and an afro hairstyle). The roof is the most spectacular part of the church – you just stand there in awe in semi-darkness until your neck hurts
