Ethiopia: Harar – Museums in Harar Old City

While the old city of Harar is an open-air museum in itself, there are two building within the walled city that stand out architecturally. These are two large wooden mansions that originally belonged to wealthy merchants. The fist is the Rimbauld Museum, named after a French poet who owned it at one time – a spectacular and very ornate building with colorful windows, elaborate staircases and a collection of historic artifacts inside. Quite nearby is another mansion – Teferi House aka Sherif Harar City Museum – a private museum that has a huge collection of cutural gems from Harar – ancient Islamic tests, weapons, clothing.
