Ethiopia: Harar – Outside the CIty Walls
The UNESCO World Heritage city of Harar is one of the historically most important cities in the world and is the fourth holiest in Islam. The city lied on the major trading routes between Africa and the Arabian peninsula. It’s location on top of a 6000+ high foot plateau made for good defenses and cooler climate. The modern city of Harar grew around the old city from around 1700s, but the walled inner old city dates back to perhaps the 6th century AD or much earlier. White boulevards and ornate old buildings lead you to the old city gates, meticulously restored and preserved.
