Ethiopia: Khat Plantations in Harar Region
The Harari Region (or Harar state) in Ethiopia used to be known for the best coffee in the country that was famous for its coffee – elevation, slopes, soils, and sun made for a perfect combination. Nowadays, the only crop dominating the landscapes is khat, khat, and more khat – the narcotic plant that has most of the Horn of Africa chewing nonstop. Mostly small farmers tender to khat plantation, a major source of significant cash.
