Ethiopia: Lalibela – Heavenly Jerusalem Church Cluster
The other cluster of five rock-hewn churches is known as the “Heavenly Jerusalem” aka the Eastern Group. Churches here are less elaborate and smaller than in the other cluster (see the previous post), but they are also darker and more mysterious. It’s speculated that some of the churches in this cluster were actually administrative buildings and shops rather then churches. Maybe it was later in the afternoon, but the interplay of sunlight through the windows was fantastic, as were the massive doors with 9-inch nails. Literally!
