Ethiopia: Rock-hewn Churches of Tigray
There are over one hundred rock-hewn churches throughout the mountains of the Tigray region – most are high up in the mountains on inaccessible cliffs and require hours of trekking and climbing to reach them. Abraha We Atsbeha and Wukro Cherkos churches were good representation – built into the red rock and shaped in a form of crucifix, both were spectacularly located on high cliffs. Inside – thousand year old frescoes adorned the walls and ceilings, many in perfect condition. I personally found these churches even more spectacular and culturally unique then the famous Lalibela churches – and all of them are off the main tourist circle. Both churches had active service happening at the time of visit.
