Fiji: Nadi – Kava Market
Kava is a traditional beverage in Fiji, made from the root of kava plant – the root is ground into powder, then mixed with water and strained off particles. The resulting concoction has sedative and euphoric qualities – in other words – it is a mild drug! In Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga kava is drunk everywhere and there are even kava bars where the atmosphere is rather quite and low key as everyone is somewhat stoned and sleepy (kava is considered to be a depressant drug, slowing down messaging between brain and body functions). The market for kava in Nadi is huge – stalls after stalls of dried roots in bunches and weaved together, powder kava in all sort of packaging, and sellers telling you their kava is the best.
