Finland: Lapland – Reindeer Encounters
Lapland is full of reindeer, they are everywhere – you see them hiking in the woods, driving on the highway, or stopping at parking areas along the highway. The reindeer is very similar to the caribou in North America. Both males and females grow antlers, they can see ultraviolet light (to spot urine markings on white snow), they have special bones in their noses to warm up the incoming cold air, they click their knees when walking to signal their location in snowstorm to others, and they survive on lichen all winter. Remarkable animals!
