France: Auxerre

Auxerre is yet another spectacular medieval town in Burgundy, founded by Gauls and later a Roman settlement, Autessiodurum). It was a key religious center in the Middle Ages, and has a wealth of well-preserved historical monuments, religious buildings, and including half-timbered houses. Among the major attraction are the stunning Cathedral of Saint-Étienne, a stunning Gothic cathedral from 13th century known for its intricate stained-glass windows and ornate choir. A few blocks away is the Abbey of Saint-Germain with a Carolingian crypt with frescoes, one of France’s oldest. Also in the city center is the Tour de l’Horloge clock tower from the 15th century, with an astronomical clock. And the cobblestone streets are packed with old half-timbered houses! Awesome little town!
