France: Avignon
Avignon has been the seat for seven popes in the mid 14th century and as such is full of magnificent historic monuments and attraction. The two largest (and both on UNESCO World Heritage List) are the Papal Palace and the Avignon Bridge. The Palace is one of the largest medieval gothic buildings in Europe and is fronted by a large square where you can done and enjoy the view. The Avignon bridge was built across the Rhone river in 1177 and originally had 22 stone arches but only 4 remain now.
