France: Beaune – Patriarche Wine Cellars

Maison Patriarche Père et Fils has the largest wine cellars in Beaune, an insane maze of underground passageways underneath the town center. Founded in 1780 by Jean-Baptiste Patriarche, this historic wine house and cellars has evolved into one of the most visited wine sites in France. The cellars are housed in the former 17th-century Convent of the Visitandines, acquired in 1796 for its ideal vaulted galleries suited to wine storage. Some sections date back to the 13th century. Once you descend into the cellars – it’s a real adventure navigating 5km of dimly lit caves with over 2 million bottles. There were bottles here as far back as 1930! And as you explore the caves l, there are multiple spots to taste the celebrated Burgundy wines – reds and whites – seven different ones!
