France: Beaune

The historic walled city of Beaune is often called the wine “capital of Burgundy.” The town has well-preserved medieval monuments, including the Hospices de Beaune (Hôtel-Dieu) with its distinctive geometric-patterned tile roof, and the Notre-Dam Church. There are lots of historic buildings and cobblestone streets. There are also dozens of wine houses and the entire underground of Beaune is a maze of centuries-old wine cellars. The town is encircled by ancient ramparts and towers.
