France: Carcassonne
Back to France. Carcassonne is a walled medieval town in the heart of the Languedoc province. The town’s strategic location resulted in it being fortified over and over through the ages into a magnificent fortress city. The entire city is surrounded by two circles of walls and ramparts with 53 conical towers and a massive drawbridge. If that wasn’t enough, inside is the castle with its own walls and its own drawbridge. There is also a magnificent gothic cathedral and dozens of narrow cobblestone streets. It’s one of the main tourist sites in France (obviously on UNESCO list) and is packed to the rim with tourists and souvenirs shops which dampens the enjoyment somewhat.
