France: Carnac Megaliths

Along the souther coast of Brittany, near the village of Carbac, lies a large area of megalithic stones, arranged in neat rows and lines. These were built between 5000 BC and 2500 BC, making them some of the oldest megalithic monuments on the planet. The exact purpose of the stones is not known but scientists speculate that they served ceremonial purposes, possibly as a “temple” aligned with solstices or lunar cycles. The complex is divided into three main alignments – Menec, Kermario, and Kerlescan. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
