France: Grenoble
Grenoble is often called the capital of the Alps and was the home of the 1968 Winter Olympics. The city lies in a bowl surrounded by massive towering mountains. la Bastille, a fortress, is located on a mountain right above the city and a cable car takes you to the top. This cable car shaped in round cabins known as “Les bulles” (the bubbles) was in fact the first cable car in the world launched in 1934, and is an undisputed symbol of the city. The view from the top is beyond breathtaking offering an unimaginable alpine and cityscape panorama as far as the eye can see.
