France: Mont Blanc – Aiguille du Midi
Mont Blanc is the highest mountain in Europe (not including the Caucasus) rising to 4,810 m (15,781 ft). Permanently covered by glaciers in snow it towers above other peaks in the French Alps. You can get really close to it by taking a cable car to the Aiguelle du Midi peak at 3,842 m (12,605 ft). It was the world’s highest cable car when originally built in the 60s. The views from the top are immense – with Mont Blanc on one side and the Chamonix Valley in the other. You can even ski from here but you need a personal guide as it is all off piste and glaciers everywhere.
